General health check and assessment

Health Assessments

Regular health checks are one of the most important things you can do for your long-term wellbeing. Our GPs at Kiama Downs Medical Practice offer comprehensive health assessments to detect and manage health issues early, before they become serious.

What We Check

A general health check may include:

  • Blood pressure and heart health assessment
  • Blood tests for cholesterol, blood sugar, liver and kidney function
  • Diabetes screening and management
  • Weight and BMI assessment
  • Cancer screening (bowel, skin, breast, cervical, prostate)
  • Mental health and wellbeing check
  • Lifestyle factors review (diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol)
  • Medication review
  • Immunisation status review

Who Should Have a Health Check?

We recommend regular health checks for:

  • Adults aged 45 and over (or 30 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples)
  • Anyone with a family history of chronic disease
  • People with existing health conditions requiring monitoring
  • Those who haven't seen a GP in over 12 months

Medicare Health Assessments

Medicare provides rebates for certain health assessments, including:

  • 45–49 Year Health Check: A one-off health assessment for patients aged 45–49 who are at risk of developing chronic disease
  • 75+ Health Assessment: An annual comprehensive health assessment for patients aged 75 and over
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Check: Annual health assessments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of any age

Our nurses bulk bill GP Management Care Plans and Health Assessments. For more information, see our appointments page.

Chronic Disease Management

If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma or arthritis, your GP can develop a GP Management Plan (GPMP) and Team Care Arrangement (TCA) to coordinate your ongoing care. These plans are bulk billed by our nurses.
